Business Plans


This week, we focused on the importance of a business plan and how to make one. I made a business plan for my $100 project and I also made one for my “Big Idea.” I am not completely what it is I want to do after I graduate (or when my kids are older, and I have time to start a business), but for the purposes of this class I made a business plan for a future quilting business called Rags to Riches. I have been making rag quilts and I have really enjoyed it, so I could see myself making that into a good home-based business in the future. This was a real revelation because one of the things that I did was sit down and calculate how much money I could make by selling these quilts. I researched on Etsy how much these quilts were selling for and I saw that I could sell them for considerably less than the competition and still make good money on them. This made me feel like I could be rather successful in this business.

1. If you pursue your calling with discipline, intentionality, and the help of fellow travelers, what are the chances that your worst case scenario will really happen? Never Give Up

One thing that stood out to me in the readings and videos this week is that we are not alone. We have the help of the Lord and His gospel to guide us along the way. One of the videos mentioned that there are going to be lots of people who don't believe in us and what we want to do. This is just like Nephi with his older brothers who thought he could not build a boat and he could not get the plates, but we know that we can do Anything with the help of the Lord. A lot of times, our goals may seem too big for our own good and we might feel that we just can't do any more, but we have to remember that we are not alone. The Lord will help us accomplish the things that we must to in this life. We just have to follow his guidance as we go through our lives. Weighing the Costs

This week has been helpful in understanding some of the things that are more difficult about becoming an entrepreneur. As I read Randy Haykin's case study, I came to understand a little more about some of the struggles that entrepreneurs have to go through, even when they are very successful. There are always risks and challenges that come our way when we are trying to do something new and different. Some of these struggles are going to involves the lives of others around us and not just ourselves. It seems that these are going to be the most difficult struggles of all. When it is just yourself who has to take the fall when things go wrong in your business, it does not seem as bad. When it is your own family and also the families of many individuals who work under you that have the risk of losing the jobs or not being successful, this seems like much more of a risk.
