New Class! Small Business Creation

So, I started a new class last week. B 283 or Small Business Creation. I'm pretty excited about a project that we have assigned in this class. It's called the $100 project. Basically, we are going to be allowed $20 capital to start our business and we have a goal of $100 profit. I have been trying to think of what business I could start that could be started in a matter of weeks, be profitable, and that I could start with only $20! So far, I think the limited budget is going to be my biggest difficulty. We were asked to make a couple lists of twenty ideas, one for the $100 project and one for our "Big Idea," which is the business that we ultimately want to start. I am having a really hard time coming up with so many ideas! But one thing we were taught in order to do this assignment is to look at the things that are wrong in this world, the things that could be better, cause pain, or the things people complain about and make it better. I'm still working on these ideas, but thinking in this way has helped me think of a lot more than I have in the past. I'm really looking forward to this class, especially the $100 project.

Never Give Up

One thing that stood out to me in the readings and videos this week is that we are not alone. We have the help of the Lord and His gospel to guide us along the way. One of the videos mentioned that there are going to be lots of people who don't believe in us and what we want to do. This is just like Nephi with his older brothers who thought he could not build a boat and he could not get the plates, but we know that we can do Anything with the help of the Lord. A lot of times, our goals may seem too big for our own good and we might feel that we just can't do any more, but we have to remember that we are not alone. The Lord will help us accomplish the things that we must to in this life. We just have to follow his guidance as we go through our lives. Weighing the Costs

This week has been helpful in understanding some of the things that are more difficult about becoming an entrepreneur. As I read Randy Haykin's case study, I came to understand a little more about some of the struggles that entrepreneurs have to go through, even when they are very successful. There are always risks and challenges that come our way when we are trying to do something new and different. Some of these struggles are going to involves the lives of others around us and not just ourselves. It seems that these are going to be the most difficult struggles of all. When it is just yourself who has to take the fall when things go wrong in your business, it does not seem as bad. When it is your own family and also the families of many individuals who work under you that have the risk of losing the jobs or not being successful, this seems like much more of a risk.
